Most people who call me have been burned by a web designer before. Not by bad design. By bad service.

I wanted to know if that was just my phone, so I went looking. I read industry surveys, agency forums and a lot of frustrated business owners. The same ten complaints came up over and over.

One survey stood out. Setup asked more than 400 brand and agency professionals why clients end agency relationships. The top reason was unhappiness with what the agency delivered, cited by 48% of clients. That number jumped 14 points in a single year.

So here are the ten complaints, in plain words. Under each one is what we do about it at Break The Image, and where it is written down so you can hold us to it.

    1. "They stopped answering me."

This is the big one. One agency collected dozens of complaints about web design companies and found the main problem was service, not design and not code. Clients get left out of the loop, then they get ghosted.

What we do: Transparent communication is one of our written guarantees. You hear the truth from us, including when something is not working. And you talk to the person actually doing the work, not a salesperson who disappears after the deposit.

    2. "It was supposed to take six weeks. It took six months."

Missed deadlines show up in almost every complaint list. Some clients wait months for a single new page.

What we do: When your scope and content are approved, your launch date goes in writing. If we miss it by a full month for reasons on our side, your care plan fee is waived until the site is live. To be fair to both of us, missing content or approvals pause the clock, and new scope sets a new date. We put money behind the date because a deadline without a cost is just a hope.

    3. "They're holding my website hostage."

This is the complaint that makes people angriest. The agency registers your domain in its own name. It keeps admin rights to your analytics. Then it charges a fee when you want to leave. Some owners have watched their domain expire and get auctioned off.

What we do: Your domain, site, content, images and code belong to you. Your reporting accounts are set up in your name with you as owner. Any client who wants their files gets them in full, even past clients. We do not hold websites hostage.

    4. "It looks great. Nobody calls."

A pretty site that nobody finds is a brochure in a drawer. Most designers build the site and stop. SEO, ads and lead tracking are someone else's job.

What we do: We build the site and we do the work that brings people to it: SEO, Google Ads and CRM automation, under one roof. Your calls and leads are tracked in accounts you own, so you can see what is working with your own eyes.

    5. "Every little change costs me."

Surprise hosting bills. An hourly charge to swap one photo. Invoices nobody can explain. A lack of transparency is one of the most common pain points business owners report about agencies.

What we do: Our prices are on our website. Care plans start at $29 a month and cover hosting and upkeep. We scope projects honestly up front, so you don't get surprise invoices for things that should have been included.

    6. "I'm stuck in a contract I can't get out of."

Long contracts with steep cancellation fees are a classic trap. You find out the work is bad in month two, and you are paying for it until month twelve.

What we do: We don't lock you in. Care plans and growth services like SEO and Google Ads are month to month with no contract. Your website build is a fixed price. Pay it up front, or split it into 12 payments if that is easier on cash flow. Want out early? Pay off what is left of the build and you are done, with no penalty and no charge for months of service you won't use. Either way, the site is yours.

    7. "They promised page one."

Overpromising is all over the complaint lists. Guaranteed rankings. Guaranteed leads. Numbers that never show up.

What we do: We do not guarantee rankings, leads, traffic or revenue. Nobody honest can. What we guarantee is what we control: communication, your access to every report, a written launch date, month-to-month service and your files. We also hold our own website to a rule: no made-up numbers. If we cite a stat, we name the source.

    8. "They didn't get my business."

In the Setup survey, "the agency didn't understand our business" was the second biggest reason clients left. The same template, the same fix, for every company.

What we do: We learn your trade before we write a word. We have built more than 50 websites for pond contractors alone, and we work with remodelers, plumbers, coaches, nonprofits and online stores. Every case study we publish follows the same 12-step method, starting with the business, not the design.

    9. "I got handed off to someone I never met."

Smaller clients often feel pushed down the list. The person who sold the project vanishes, and the work goes to a junior or an overseas contractor nobody can reach.

What we do: You work directly with me. When a project needs extra hands, I bring in designers I have worked with for years. You will know who they are.

    10. "They disappeared after launch."

Some designers go out of business. Some just stop answering. Either way, the site goes stale, the software goes out of date, and the owner has no idea how to get in.

What we do: Break The Image has been doing this since 2016. Our care plans keep your site hosted, updated, backed up and supported after launch. And because your files are always yours, you are never stranded, even if you leave us.

    The short version

Notice something? Almost none of these complaints are about design. They are about trust. Answering the phone. Hitting the date. Telling the truth about the contract. Letting go of files that were never yours to keep.

That is the job. The design is the easy part.

If you have been burned before, I would like to hear about it. Call me at 410-925-1762 or email jeff@breaktheimage.com. Every guarantee I mentioned is written out on our guarantees page, and every price is on our pricing page.
