Why You Should Own Your Website, Not Rent It

Quick question: If you wanted to leave your web agency tomorrow, could you take your website with you?

For many business owners, the honest answer is: "I don't know."

    That's a problem.

Owning vs. Renting: What's the Difference?

    Owning Your Website

When you own your website, you control:

    • The domain name (registered to you)
    • The hosting account (you can log in and access files)
    • The code and design (yours to modify or move)
    • The content (text, images, everything)
    • Access credentials (you have admin access)

If you want to leave your agency, you take everything with you.

    Renting Your Website

When you rent, the agency controls:

    • The domain (in their name or account)
    • The hosting (on their server)
    • The code (proprietary or locked)
    • The access (they won't give you credentials)

If you want to leave, you leave with nothing.

    The Warning Signs You're Renting

"We handle all the technical stuff—you don't need access."

Translation: We don't want you to realize you're locked in.

    "We use a proprietary platform/builder."

Translation: We built you on something only we can maintain.

Your monthly fee is mostly "hosting."

Good hosting costs $20-100/month. If you're paying $200+ mostly for "hosting," something's off.

They won't tell you where your domain is registered.

Your domain is your identity. You should know where it is.

"If you leave, you'll need to start over."

This is a threat, not a feature.

    Real Stories

    The $10,000 Hostage Situation

A roofing company wanted to switch agencies after 2 years. The agency demanded a $10,000 "buyout fee." They owned nothing and had to start over.

    The Disappeared Domain

An agency went out of business. The domain was registered through them. It took months and thousands in legal fees to recover it.

    The Surprise Renewal

A contractor's domain was in their agency's account. The agency forgot to renew it. Someone else bought it. The business lost their domain entirely.

    What You Should Own

    1. Your Domain Name

Registered in YOUR name, in an account YOU control.

    2. Your Hosting Account

An account with a hosting company in your name.

    3. Your Website Files

The ability to download complete backups.

    4. Admin Access

Full administrator access to your website backend.

    5. All Content

    Text, images, videos—everything.

    6. Analytics and Tracking

Your Google Analytics in your name.

    How to Protect Yourself

    For New Websites

    Before signing anything, clarify:

    1. Who will own the domain registration?
    2. Who will own the hosting account?
    3. Will I have full admin access?
    4. If we part ways, what do I keep?

    For Existing Websites

    1. Log into your domain registrar. Can you?
    2. Log into your hosting. Whose account is it?
    3. Log into your website admin. Do you have full access?

If any are controlled by your agency without clear ownership, you need to have a conversation.

    What We Do

Every client we work with owns their website. Period.

    • Domain is registered in your name
    • Hosting is in your name
    • You have full admin access from day one
    • All files and content belong to you
    • If you leave, you take everything

We don't believe in hostage situations.

Want a website you actually own?

We build websites where you own everything. Domain, hosting, code, content—all yours. Pick a time to talk.
